Chapter 4: "The Noose Tightens"

In the title image for Chapter 4, the literal meaning of "The Noose Tightens" is obvious.  However, as a figure of speech (non-literal interpretation), the title means that things are closing in.  In other words, the situation is getting worse for Vladek, his family and the other Jews.

In class, Mr. Lyons asked you to pay close attention to how Spiegelman reveals the war, bringing it slowly from the background to the forefront of the story.  In Chapter 2, the Nazis were unveiled as Vladek saw a harmless flag outside of his train window, and as characters in stories he heard about people he didn't know in another country (Germany).  Now, the Nazis and the war are closing in on Vladek, as things move closer to home.

For your REQUIRED blog comment, name and discuss ONE way you can see the "noose tightening" on Vladek and the other characters.  How is the war closing in on them?  How have things changed in the years since Chapter 2 took place?

Please do not discuss more than ONE subject/item, so there are things left for your classmates to discuss.  No more than three comments on any ONE subject, please.  REMEMBER TO READ ALL OF THE BLOG POSTS, AS THIS IS OUR CLASS DISCUSSION.  MATERIAL FROM THE BLOGS/COMMENTS WILL BECOME SUBJECT MATTER FOR QUIZZES AND TESTS!

  1. One way that the noose is tightening on Vladek and his family is that his textile factory has been taken away from him. He is no longer in charge of it, and he is also not receiving any money from it, despite the fact he made it.

  3. One wat that the Noose is tightening on Vladek is how the family can not get all the food materials they need and Nazi all limiting their necessities. They only gets 8 ounces of bread a day for an entire family and a tiny bit or margarine. And it is really dangerous to use The black market to get money because the Nazis take you to a work camp if you break even the smallest law they have made.

  5. One way the noose is tightening on Vladek and his family and other Jews is when the Nazis are taking the furniture from the Jews. They came into Vladek's house and took many of the furniture from the house, even when Vladek's father in law hid the furniture and then gave that to the Nazis, then the Nazis came back for his mother in laws bed too.

  8. The noose is shown tightening on page 80 where people are forced to wear the star of David on their coats whe nthey are outside. This is shown on all the Jewish people on these pages.

  11. A way that the noose is tightening on Vladek is that when he goes out to make money and provide for his family, the S.S. came and took people that didn't have valid work papers. Vladek was almost caught without one, because he didn't know this was going on.

  16. You can tell that the noose is tightening on page 80 frame one, where the Nazi's are pulling random Jews out of the street and beating them for no reason. You can see that Life for Vladek and the Jews is getting more crucial.

  17. One way the noose is tightening is how food is so hard for the Jews to come by.They are given coupons for 8 ounces of bread, margarine, surgar and Jam per week. In order to have any other food, they have to turn to the black market which can risk their lives.

  18. One way that the noose had tighten is that the Nazis are already at Poland, this shows that the noose is tightening because at first that the Nazi's were far away, now they are right there, at their neighborhood. When they are at Poland, that means that the noose has already tightened, when the Nazis had hung the business men that Vladek knew.

  19. One way I see things closing in on Vladek is that he was forced to move into a ghetto. He had to live with his 12 family members in only two and a half rooms. This shows the noose tightening on Vladek and his family because he no longer has a choice. The Nazis are deciding where they live now, and Vladek is slowly losing more and more freedom.

  20. The noose tightens on page 82, frame 3. The poster tells Germans to turn in Jews for a reward of sugar. This shows that the food situation is becoming worse. The noose is tightening on everyone. Also, now people have a motive for turning in Jews, so their nooses are tightening, too.

  21. One way that the noose is tightening is that the Nazis are in their town now, when the Nazis were far away the Jews thought, Oh it could never happen here. But now that the Nazis are in Poland, the "noose" is getting tighter on the Jews.

  22. A way the noose tightens is that the Jews are being sent to the left and rightin the stadium. Families are being separated. It's life or death. There's only so much time before the people from the right are also sent to Auschuwitz. Vladek and his families' lives as well as other Jews are beginning to slowly come to an end.

  23. One way that the "noose is tightening" on the Jews is that a lot of their belongigns are being takn away. The Nazi's came to VLadek's family's house and took thier bed with out paying or anything. The way the Nazi's took their fruniture made it seem like they thought the Jew's owed it to them or just didn't deserve it. ( page 79 frame 8 ) " You CHEATED us last time jew!" That is evidence that the Nazi's made it seem like VLadek's family owed it to them.

  25. One way that shows the the "noose is the tightening" is that on page 82, the Jews were ordered by the Germans to move Sosnowiec. This shows that the noose is tightening because it shows how the Nazis are closing in closer and closer to Vladeck and his family.

  26. The Nazi's are taking over the lives and businesses of the Jews. Their jobs are being taken away and their factories overrun by "Aryan Managers". Because so many Jews are losing their jobs and factories, like Vladek finds out about his textile factory when he comes home, secret businesses became so popular. It is visible that the noose is tightening because so many illegal businesses have to be done. The jews have no way to make money, except illegally in black market trading.

  27. On page 83, frame 4, you can see the noose tightening because there is some jews hanging. They are hanging because of the black market. This is another way of the noose tightening because it is getting easier to get caught by the German Nazis. They are also wearing the six-point star attached to their clothes so that it is harder to hide that you are a jew. This is different from Chapter 2 because before, they would only hear bad things in a place far from where they lived and now they are experiencing this with the people they know and in their village.

The noose is tightening on the jews because some jews are getting caught black marketing and it is gettin them killed. This causes the noose to get even tighter because the jews have to be even more careful because it's hard to know who to trust because one wrong move can cost a jew his life.
